Hugh went to Ireland and I went to Michigan and New York on summer vacation.

Just outside of Chicago in the US is a little suburb with a very famous diner for kids and adults alike. It is in a town called Des Plaines (about 30 minutes out from downtown) and is named the ‘Choo Choo’. The diner has been around since the 50′s and is all train themed. While their are booths/tables, the main attraction is the counter where a real working model train circles around, delivering your food on little baskets. The prices are very reasonable and the menu is your usual diner fair, though they kindly offer veggie burgers as well. I take my nephew there a lot and the place is always pretty full but I have never had to wait more than a few minutes for a table. All in all it is a good time for all.

There’s a fabulous restaurant in the Commercial Drive area of Vancouver, BC, called Little Nest, which caters explicitly to parents and young children. It has a great, affordable menu (the owner is the former pastry chef at a chichi five-star restaurant called Lumiere), including an extensive kids’ menu.
Modernist Dwell-type decor, ample stroller room, and a wonderful play area (featuring an amazing wooden toy kitchen built by the owner’s husband) make this one of the best spots in the city to take babies and small children. Though the food and ambience are so amazing, I frequently see kid-free couples and groups in there as well.
    Address and phone number:
    Little Nest
    1716 Charles Street

Ah, Burgoo! A favourite of ours since long before becoming parents. We’re living abroad just now, and oh how you’ve got me longing for a visit to Burgoo! We’ve been several times with our son (who was 9 months old when we left Canada). One thing – if you’re bringing a stroller, there is a step up to the main dining area, and there isn’t a lot of space. But the staff have always been really helpful when we have brought our stroller. (Maybe it’s because we’re there a few times a month?)
As for Cafe Crepe… I wouldn’t have picked it. It is very studenty, and the last time I went (while heavily pregnant), the server dropped my bottle of apple juice. It shattered below the table, and she expected me to hoist my swollen legs as the spill air-dried. (She did, at least, pick up the glass. And then we asked whether we could move to another – empty – tables.) Well, unlike the neighbouring Mahoney & Sons, children are allowed.
Another great choice is Moderne Burger, on West Broadway at… Larch? When we left Vancouver they were closed for renovation, but they have the best hamburgers, fries, milkshakes, and floats I’ve ever tasted. Fun 50s-style diner decor, and the owner is very friendly.
Solly’s Bagels are also excellent. The location at W7th at Yukon (near Cambie) is especially kid-friendly.
