Just in case any of you were inspired by chef Worral Thompson’s suggestion in the recent Healthy and Organic Living magazine to add henbane as a "tasty addition" to salads let me offer some advice: PUT THE DEADLY WEED DOWN!
Yep, it appears the UK celebrity chef got this poisonous and potentially fatal ingredient confused with fat hen weed, which "has edible leaves that can be used in salads or cooked like spinach," according to the Guardian.
Not that henbane isn’t without its uses. The ancient Egyptians smoked it to relieve toothache and it has long been associated with magic and witchcraft potions. It was also the main ingredient use to poison Hamlet’s father.
All of which gives henbane quite a cultural pedigree but it’s no substitute for salad!
